Bonus miles with American and Delta shopping portals
I love shopping portals and have written about them frequently. Last year I earned over 11,000 American AAdvantage miles through the American Airlines AAdvantage eShopping portal. Just through September of this year, I have already earned 11,653 AAdvantage miles. You can say I get significant value through these sites. They cost nothing - all you do is click-through to a participating merchant via the portal and earn a certain number of miles for each eligible dollar spent.
As we head into the Christmas shopping season, both AAdvantage eShopping and Delta Air Lines's SkyMiles Shopping are offering bonus miles by achieving certain spend thresholds.
Both offers are straightforward and and similar with both promotions running through November 19., 2017. With American, you can earn earn up to 4,000 bonus American AAdvantage miles across three different tiers:
- Earn 500 bonus miles when you spend $150
- Earn 2,000 bonus miles when you spend $600
- Earn 4,000 bonus miles when you spend $1,200
Though Delta is my hometown and primary airline, I don't generally find as many merchants where I shop on the SkyMiles Shopping portal. However, the site also has a Christmas shopping offer through November 19. The structure is similar to American's:
- Earn 500 bonus miles when you spend $150
- Earn 1,000 bonus miles when you spend $300
Your purchases are cumulative throughout the offer period for both programs. At the end of the promotion, your total amount spent will be added across all of your transactions to determine your bonus. This is, of course, on top of the miles you would normally earn with a merchant, including merchant-specific offers. Just yesterday, you could have earned 6 miles per dollar spent versus the standard one miles per dollar at the online Apple store! (Unfortunately, that was a one day offer and has ended.) No registration is required for either promo. Just start shopping!
Assuming you value American AAdvantage miles and Delta SkyMiles equally, you could earn 500 miles in either program if you are spending up to $150. If you plan to spend more than that, but less than $600, you will want to use SkyMiles Shopping. If you think you will spend north of $600, then you will want to use AAdvantage eShopping. Of course, you could use both portals if you spend enough. For example, if you plan to drop between $900 and $1,200, you could use SkyMiles Shopping for $300 of transactions for 500 bonus SkyMiles. The balance could earn 2,000 American AAdvantage miles. If your purchases will total $1,200 or more, go with the American site and use the Delta portal for any spend beyond $1,200.
I have not made my Christmas shopping list or I would have already placed some orders. Fortunately, I still have almost two weeks to think make my list and check it twice and try to earn some very nice bonus points!
